paiRED

{Postings About Imbibing Reds with Everday Dinners} Wine was meant to be enjoyed with food. Yet when wine is evaluated at big palate-busting tastings, food is rarely part of the equation. The big wines that impress critics at tastings often come home to obliterate dinner. Hence, paiRED. Putting our livers on the line, we'll pair specific wines with selected recipes and make evaluations based on the match.

{The Times Literary Supplement Hangs a Label on S/Chanson: “Demi-Vegetarian”}

Both Chanson and Shanson confirmed today that they are uninterested in being labeled “demi-vegetarians.”

Neither knew the word even existed until Chanson discovered it in a Times Literary Supplement review of Michael Pollan’s important new book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma.

The ah-ha moment and first flash of recognition were quickly followed by a long let down as S/Chanson soon realized the label was a bust.

Here’s what the TLS says about demi-vegetarian. “In the terminology of the moral philosopher R. M. Hare, Pollan is a "demi-vegetarian" -- a moderate and selective meat-eater who, by insisting on free-range, organic, local, etc, products, has more of an impact on animal welfare, it is argued, than out-and-out vegetarians, whom producers and suppliers have already discounted for.”

Shanson noted, “It’s the use of ‘vegetarian’ that I don’t like. I am not a ‘half’ vegetarian, I’m not a vegetarian at all. Besides, what’s with that ‘for’ at the end of the sentence?”

Later, at work, it was pointed out to Chanson that the better term would be something that plays on “omnivore” rather than “vegetarian.” Thus, it would be “demi-omnivore,” or maybe even better, "demi-vore." Yes, Demivore! That's it! Thanks, Syd. That’s something S/Chanson can live with.
